Hi! I'm Phil Cutler, a "third generation Cutler", with a brief history of our company. My grandfather, Nat Cutler, founded Cutler's in 1948 with the help of Sam Goody, who my grandfather met with personally and who later became his mentor.

At 41 Broadway, New Haven, Connecticut, my grandfather and my grandmother, Lee, opened the doors, and Cutler's was born! They outgrew that space quickly and, by 1953, moved the store to its best-known location of 33 Broadway. By 1954, my grandfather had two "listening booths" made, so customers could listen to records before they bought them (We now have 100 CD listening stations serving the same purpose!) Even today, people come in on a weekly basis to reminisce about those original listening booths!

Following the deaths of my grandparents between 1958 & 1961, my father, Jayson took over the responsibility of running the store. With visits from Tom Jones, Brenda Lee, Everly Brothers and Tony Bennett (just to name a few), life in our store remained very exciting. My dad tells me a story of one of his most memorable moments when the Beatles "White Album" was released, and he received 2000 copies to sell. Hundreds and hundreds of excited people lined up around the corner until the album was sold out that day. (I later had the same experience with the Bruce Springsteen Live 1975-1985 box set).

In 1982, my father opened a store just for classical music right next door to our existing location. The Yale/New Haven communities continue to love and appreciate our classical music to this day.

I came into the business in 1971, when I was 13 years of age and never left. My dad and I worked side by side until he retired close to 10 years ago. In 1999, as part of Yale's revitalization of the Broadway area, we moved two doors down to 27 Broadway where we still remain today. The classical store still lives on, but is now a store within our main store. Broadway is definitely our home!

So this is where you'll find us, 57 years later, in the heart of the Yale University campus and New Haven community, just waiting to share our music history with you! On behalf of the generations that precede me, I will always continue to look forward to serving you!
